The heart is symbol no. 1 for Love.

The Heart is the symbol for Love and therefore a shape very suitable for the many occasions where we use flowers to express our deepest feelings.

Marriages, Valentine"s Day and of course for sympathy during days like All Saints & All Souls day.

During International Horti Fair 2007, Franky Bollingh created a heart of flowers and below you can see how easy it is to make this arrangement yourself.

Step 1 - Get your materials organised

For this heart we used the following:40 X Carnations "Eskimo"10 X Roses "Red Naomi!"10 X Kalanchoe "Kaluna" & "Mayon"01 X OASIS® Floral Foam Naylor base heart 43x46 cm (art. 8113)30 X OASIS Wedding collection "Diamante Pins" (art. 62301)01 X OASIS Wire products "zigzag wire" Red (art. 7738)01 X Floralife spray " Leafshine"20 X Plastic apples

Step 2 - Setting the shape

Of course you have to get the heart shaped floral foam properly soaked with water. After this we start to create the playfull shape on the heart by creating the border with the Kalanchoe and the carnations. We used Kalanchoe "Kaluna" & "Mayon" as I wanted to show you that it is not a problem to use plants in arrangements. It actually gives the arrangement a very natural garden look with two shades. And done properly they will last very long.On the other side I used Carnations "Eskimo" This variety has a great intensive red color and extremely big flower which will open nicely during its long vaselife.

Step 3 - Filling the heart

Once the shape and borders are finished we can start filling the heart. One the one side I"ve used small plastic apples which will obviously last forever and by spraying them with a "Floralife Leafshine" they get a very nice shiny touch which also increases the tenability of the piece. After this I put some Diamate pins in between the apples to create an even more shiny effect. On the other half I used Red Naomi! Roses. They remind me of "just being in Love". It is a very large headed rose which has a big full bud and is harvested quite open. So they look good from the first moment but keep opening even bigger. They are the icing on the cake and keep wonderfully long for a red rose.

Step 4 - Separating the two sides

Lastely I used some red "Bullion Wire" which I curled up like a fence end placed it in the border between the two sides. Creating a playfull hard and soft side with two diffferent color shades.Especially for Sympathy events you want to create a heart that lasts very long. This is why I choose for all the materials above and am using the Leafshine. It won"t last as infinite as your love but it should come a long way....
